Intro

AAMCO is a chain of transmission-repair specialists that provides complete car care services. The company was founded by Anthony A. Martino and Robert Morgan. Today, it operates more than 600 automotive repair centers in America and Canada.

History

Before starting Anthony A. Martino Company (AAMCO) in 1957, Martino had been working on automatic transmissions on leased space in Philadelphia. He founded the company under the name AAMCO Auto and Truck Repair.

The name was not only picked to reflect Martino’s initials but also to make sure it appeared at the top of listings in Yellow Pages. Martino started by opening several shops in Philadelphia before expanding to other areas. This was with the help of partners Walter D’lutz’ and Richard Silva.

He decided to focus solely on automatic transmissions back in the day due to their high rate of failure. He dropped the “Auto and Truck Repair” from the company’s name to help with specialization. AAMCO provided transmission services alone until 2007.

Robert Morgan came up with an idea to nationalize the company by opening branded transmission repair stores across the country. This was in 1962 and by in 1963, AAMCO sold its first franchise to Jack and Ivan Ginninger in Newark, New Jersey.

The company was bought in 2006 by American Capital and moved its headquarters to Pennsylvania. Eleven years later, its franchiser American Driveline Systems was sold to Transom Capital Group.

Due to advancements in technology, automatic transmissions became reliable, hence reducing their repair cycle. This caused AAMCO to rebrand in the mid-2000s to AAMCO Transmissions and Total Car Care. Today, the company is the largest franchisor of car repair shops and transmission specialists.
