History

ACME Markets Inc. was initiated in 1891 when two great friends Samuel Robinson and Robert Crawford opened a neighborhood grocery store in Philadelphia’s Second and Fernon Streets. The main aim of the grocery store was to provide quality products, friendly service, and low prices. The founders then merged with four other locally-owned Philadelphia area grocery chains in 1917 to establish the American Stores Company or ASCO as was popularly referred to by shoppers.

With its significant growth over time, the American Stores Company then opened a full-service supermarket in 1937 and the company was renamed ACME Markets after the ACME Tea Company, which was the largest of the five original companies that made up ASCO. The supermarket chain prospered under the ACME Markets banner and has enjoyed decades as the leading grocery retailer chain in the Delaware Valley.
