One of the Significant Petroleum Corporations in the USA

Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) is a U.S. based oil corporation with its headquarters in California. ARCO supplies high-quality petroleum to more than 1,300 gas stations across the United States and seven Mexican states. The company operates in Indonesia, the South China Sea, and the North Sea.

Brand Origin and Top 20 Position in Fortune 500

The Atlantic Richfield Company got its name from the merger of Atlantic Refining Company and Richfield Oil Corporation in 1966. Then it also got its red ARCO Spark logo designed by the famous Bauhaus - German art school. From 1975 till 1989, the ARCO brand was appearing in the top 20 on the Fortune 500 list.

Though in 2000, Atlantic Richfield was acquired by B.P., and since 2018 it has been owned by Marathon Petroleum, today you will still find the ARCO branded gas stations. Other locations were renamed Marathon, Speedway, and Amoco.

Business Diversification

In 1968 ARCO, headed by its CEO Robert O. Anderson, discovered the Prudhoe Bay field in Alaska and started commercial oil exploration there. Through 1975-77 ARCO was among the leading investors of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, and in 1977 it acquired coal-mining operations in the West of the USA and Australia. It also started the solar panels' manufacture and production of copper and aluminum products.

However, by 2000 Atlantic Richfield sold most of the coal, mineral, solar energy, and petrochemical assets to restore its historical petroleum direction. And currently, ARCO has operations across the United States' whole territory, in the Atlantic Ocean (the northeastern arm), in the Pacific Ocean (the western arm), and Indonesia. Its high-quality gas is offered under the TOP TIER trademark at every gas station of Atlantic Richfield.

Since ARCO's first convenience chain store opened in 1978 in Southern California, these ampm branded shops (owned by B.P. America) have become very popular. In the stores attached to B.P. or ARCO gas stations, you can buy beverages, food, and snacks, get some cash at an ATM or even wash your car!

Cheap Gasoline – Why?

ARCO's petroleum is more popular than other American gas brands due to its low price. The company could afford a significant price discount because, in the 1980s, it started focusing on cutting costs and looking for new sources of income (attached stores).

ARCO managed to decrease its expenses by introducing the cash-only policy to save on processing credit cards and encouraging its customers to use prepaid and fleet cards. That is why you will not be able to pay with your credit card at many Atlantic Richfield gas stations or will be surcharged $0.45 for your debit card usage, unfortunately.

Mission and Vision

The mission of Marathon Petroleum - ARCO's current owner - is to offer advanced business expertise to its commercial partners and optimize the shareholder value. In its vision statement, Marathon Petroleum stresses its trustworthy and efficient teams. The company aims to be respected by the contractors and business partners and be the best employer.
