The history of the brand

AutoZone's history begins with the ambitious business strategy of J.R. “Pitt” Hyde III began his career at Malone & Hyde, Inc., a wholesale food business founded by his grandparents, after graduating from college. He founded and opened the specialty retailing division, and started with convenience stores, before moving into sporting good stores and supermarkets. When Pitt was exploring potential business prospects, he also recognised the need for an automobile parts store that offered only high-quality parts and sound advice. It was Pitt's conviction that such values as cleanliness, organization, usability, and customer service could be added to the parts company. With his dreams achieved in 1979.

The firm was initially called “Auto Shack”, and it was originally a subsidiary of Malone & Hyde. They started our first store on July 4, 1979, in Forrest City, Arkansas. The Auto Shack opened eight stores in two states in its first year, and transferred goods from the fulfillment center to the other eight stores.

In 1987, AutoZone became a freestanding, publicly held corporation, and Pitt served as the Company's Chairperson and CEO. In 1991, Auto Zone became a public corporation listed on the NYSE (ticker symbol: AZO). 1996, AutoZone started providing credit and distribution to skilled technicians. Since AutoZone bought AutoZone Full auto repair services, they acquired the nation's leading supplier of electronic automotive diagnostic and repair tools. In 1998, AutoZone extended its footprint beyond the U.S. to Mexico, opening a store, and in 2012, AutoZone opened a store in Brazil.

On April 17, 2017, Auto Zone was the biggest vehicle parts supplier in North America. As of August 2017, AutoZone has had over 6,000 sites, including over 500 in the United States, over 300 in Mexico, and over 14 in Brazil.

On December 22, 2018, Pitt Hyde, formerly a board member, announced that he will be stepping down from AutoZone's board.

Currently, AutoZone is the leading manufacturer and a leading dealer in the vehicle repair parts and components market with over 6,000 outlets throughout the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Brazil and funds operations on four continents.

Private labels

AutoZone's private-label brands are Valucraft, Duralast, and Duralast Gold for lead-acid car batteries (manufactured primarily by Johnson Controls, but also East Penn, Exide, and other manufacturers). Duralast Platinum batteries are of the AGM type. AutoZone offers instruments that are Duralast, and often bear a life-time warranty.

Brake pads are labeled by prices ranging from $2 to $50.

  • Duralast - semi metallic or herbal.
  • Duralast Gold is a semi-metallic or ceramic alloy.
  • Duralast Max promises superior design and performance, and it's built out of ceramic.
  • Superior longevity as opposed to OEM design and efficiency, ceramic, but copper-free.
  • The Duralast GT Street pad for performance applications and street applications.
  • Valucraft rubbing pads have been removed, as of early 2015. Duralast GT Street pads have recently been added.

The Duralast, Duralast Gold, and Valspar brands are found on other different accessories and items as well.

Duralast Elite pads were first trademarked in the early 2020s and are now distributed in select markets.

AutoZone celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2004 and suggested a sponsorship deal with NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing).

In 2007, AutoZone sponsored driver Kevin Harvick, and crew member Tim Peters.

AutoZone owns naming rights to the downtown Memphis baseball stadium that is the home of the Memphis Redbirds. The organization also funds the other bowl game. The AutoZone Liberty Cup, alongside the College Football Playoff Foundation partnered to donate $250,000 to St. Jude Hospital . The AutoZone Liberty Bowl winner in 2018 was Priscilla Presley.

They are a recognized supporter of Bellator MMA, a known MMA promotion.
