History of the brand

David’s Bridal was started by David Reisberg in 1950. Before that, he used to make wedding gowns for his own pleasure until he decided to do it for profit. He began by opening a small boutique in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Floridian Phillip Youtie later bought the small shop in 1972. Youtie had optimistic ideas and by 1988, he was able to grow the investment to 18 shops. He was then joined by his late childhood friend Steven Erlbaum who helped him expand the chain to all 50 states.

Having worked to create Mr. Good Buys, a chains store that was based in Philadelphia, Erlbaum had a lot of prior experience. The two worked together to incorporate and nationalize the company. They also built a warehouse in Hallandale Beach, Florida and set up the head office in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.

In 2000, May Department Stores bought David’s Bridal, which was also later sold in 2005 to Federated Department Stores. Federated is currently the parent company to Macy’s. In 2006, David’s Bridal was acquired by Leonard Green & Partners.

It would be sold again to Clayton, Dubilier & Rice in 2012. The acquisition became effective on October 11, 2012. The company was later declared bankrupt on November 19, 2018. However, it emerged from bankruptcy in January 2019 and is presently owned by a group of lenders. Oaktree Capital is one of its owners.
