The DD part of its name is an abbreviation for ‘deeply discounted.’ As of July 2019, Ross Stores had 249 stores under the DD’s Discounts brand spread across 39 states. These are typically located in neighborhood shopping centers where customers can easily purchase items. 

History of the brand 

Ross Department, Inc. was founded in 1950 by Morris Ross in San Bruno, California. It currently operates under the name Ross Dress for Less. It’s a chain of department stores that offers discounted items in more than 1,523 locations across the U.S., the District of Columbia, and Guam. 

By the time the company was 8 years old, it had 6 more locations operating in America. This was in 1958 when William Jackson bought the store from Ross. The stores were located in San Bruno, Novato, Redwood City, Castro Valley, Pacifica, and Vacaville. 

The six of them would later be bought again in 1982 by a group of investors. Mervin Morris, who was the owner of Mervyn’s department stores, was also part of the group. They changed the company's format to off-price retail units and had grown to 107 stores in three years. 

In 1995, Ross Department Stores had $1.4 billion in sales across its 292 stores. The company then moved its headquarters to Pleasanton, California in 2003. DD’s Discounts would later be opened in 2004. This grew annual sales to about $9.7 billion by 2012. There were more than 1,091 stores spread across 33 states. 

In 2014, Barbara Rentler replaced Michael Balmuth as CEO. She became the 25th female CEO in the U.S. to head a Fortune 500 company. Later that year, Ross’s headquarters moved to Dublin, California and was later acknowledged as the largest off-price retailer in 2018.
