History

Dick’s Sporting Goods was started by Richard “Dick” Stack in 1948. Initially, the store sold fishing tackle in Binghamton, New York. Stack had borrowed $300 from his grandmother for the business.

In 1980, Edward W. Stack bought the store from his father alongside his siblings. The store had two locations in Upstate New York. Stack put together a board of directors, relocated the company to Pittsburgh, and opened more stores in 1994.

It opened True Runner stores in 2012 which targeted runners based in Shadyside, Pittsburgh, and the Brentwood neighborhoods. Two years earlier, two women’s fitness, lifestyle, and athleisure stores under the brand name Chelsea Collective were opened in Washington, D.C. These were later closed in 2017.

In 2016, the company decided to offer sporting solutions for youth sports teams. Under Dick’s Team Sports HQ, it offered websites, sponsorship options, and uniforms. The first Field & Stream store was opened in 2013 in Pittsburgh. By 2018, the stores had grown to 35.

Today, Dick’s runs 5 distribution centers. These have been expanded over time to cater for online sales.
