Intro

The Designer Shoe Warehouse (DSW) is a chain store that sells shoes and fashion accessories from different brands. The store is owned by Designer Brands Inc., an American company that operates over 500 stores in America as well as an online store.

Designer Brands Inc. also runs about 290 leased spaces for other American retailers, including Stein Mart. In Canada, it provides footwear solutions under the brand names Shoe Warehouse and The Shoe Company.

History

Designer Brands Inc. was started in 1969 under the name Shonac Corporation. It was a shoe licensee for Value City. It opened its first store in July 1991 in Dublin, Ohio. Seven years later, it was acquired by Value City. It had grown to 48 stores by 1999.

In December 2004, an agreement was arrived at with Retail Ventures to acquire Shonac Corporation. Things did not go well and in 2005, the company experienced data theft. Up to 1.4 million customers had information from their credit card transactions stolen.

In June of the same year, the company went public and was able to launch an e-commerce website a year later. The years that followed saw it acquire more companies, including Retail Ventures which was its largest shareholder. It also acquired 44% of the Canadian shoe store Town Shoes and got a leasing agreement for DSW.

DSW expanded into the Middle East through a franchising agreement that was entered into with Apparel Brands in August 2016. In the same year, the company bought Ebuys and introduced a lineup of shoes for kids.

2017 marked the first year Under Armour shoes were sold in DSW stores. Another store was launched in Oman in June 2017. The company bought the remaining Town Shoes shares and became the owner of the company.

In early 2019, DSW announced that it would introduce nail salons in 5 of its stores. This was after testing the concept in Columbus, Ohio. In March, all DSW stores were rebranded to Designer Brands. The ticker symbol was also changed from “DSW” to “DBI” on the NYSE.
