History

Famous Footwear was founded by Neil Moldenhauer in 1960 as Neil’s Factory Shoe Outlet. It sold shoes under the name Neil’s Shoes in Madison, Wisconsin. At 29-years old, Moldenhauer financed the store using $10,000 that he had taken on loan. 

In 1964, the shoe store changed its name to Famous Footwear after Moldenhauer opened his second store in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. By 1970, he had 8 shoe outlets operating under the name Neil’s Factory Shoe Outlet and Famous Footwear and was earning up to $1 million in revenues every year. 

By 1974, there were 15 storefronts – all unified under the brand name Famous Footwear. In the same year, two employees Brian Cook and Dave Orfan, and a group of outside investors bought 90% of the store from Moldenhauer through a leveraged buyout. 

The chain store continued to grow and by 1980, it had 36 stores that generated revenues of up to $30 million. Famous Footwear was later acquired by Brown Shoe Company, a shoe company that was based in St. Louis. The new owner quickly set out for rapid expansion and by 1986, there were 230 stores countrywide. 

By the end of 1990, there were 722 stores located in 44 states. The expansion was fueled by financing from Brown Shoe Company. As of 2010, Famous Footwear had 1,126 retail stores in America including 179 thematic outlets and 947 stores.
