Foot Locker Retail Inc. traces its roots to 1974. Earlier on, F.W Woolworth Company bought Kinney Shoe Corporation which it operated as a subsidiary. Kinney opened specialty stores under the names of Stylco (1967), Susie Casuals (1968), and Foot Locker (1974).

The first store under the name Foot Locker was put up in the City of Industry, California where it remains open until today. F.W Woolworth Company put the operations of Foot Locker under Woolworth Corporation in 1988.

Woolworth remained the parent company until 1998. It adopted a new name – Venator Group, Inc. Foot Locker continued to grow and brought in up to 70% of the revenues earned by Kinney Shoe Corp.

After noticing how well Foot Locker was doing, Venator changed its name to Foot Locker, Inc. The chain would later buy Footaction USA in 2004 and acquire 350 stores owned by Footstar.

Three years later, Foot Locker launched the Foot Locker School Rewards Program in partnership with schoolPAX. The program was aimed at providing charitable donations to schools that signed up and shopped at Foot Locker.

In 2007, the store bought the skateboarding equipment retailer CCS from Alloy. It joined DoSomething.Org in 2011 and established the Foot Locker Scholar Athletes program. The program honors athletes in different high schools for their academic excellence and exemplary performance in sports.

The company celebrated its 100th anniversary on June 26, 2012. This was to commemorate the first offering of its stock on the New York Stock Exchange by F.W. Woolworth Company. Today, Foot Locker is a Fortune 500 Company that records up to $7.151 billion every year. It also invested in other companies such as GOAT.
