The History of the Brand

Babbage's was founded in Dallas, Texas, in 1984, was a small educational retailer for software. Software Etc. was acquired by Babbage's to create Babbage's Etc. The business was sold in 1999 to Barnes & Noble and eventually merged with Funco, Inc. In GameStop 2000, Funco changed its name to the currently-known GameStop. With the launching of its exclusive buy-selling platform, GameStop revolutionizes the video game industry. GameStop started to trade its' GME' IPO in 2002, and in 2004 it spun off

Barnes & Noble.

The PowerUp Rewards loyalty program was launched in 2010, securing over ten million members within the first year. GameStop is launching new product categories from downloadable digital content (DLC) to propose the best practice for titles in video games in the industry. The magazine Game Informer launches its digital version. In 2013, Game Informer magazine with 3 million subscribers became the world's biggest digital magazine and the world's third-largest magazine with almost 8 million subscribers. With acquisitions of Simply Mac and Spring Mobile AT&T Wireless, GameStop launched new Technology Brands direction and became the biggest accredited Apple reseller.

Business Directions

GameStop International opened its own first "loot" pop culture in Australia in 2014-2015 with the supermarket brand name Zing Pop Culture. GameStop purchased Geeknet, Inc., the parent of the first video game licensed retailer to purchase – ThinkGeek - and opened in 2016 in New York City their first ThinkGeek retail store.

In 2017 GameStop introduced the idea of the new 50/50 shop at select stores in EB Games Canada, devoting 50% of the selling space to video games and 50% to collectibles. Later the shop model will be introduced internationally via the GameStop, EB Games Australia, and Micromania shops. And in 2018, Game Informer published its 300th magazine with the Top 300 games ever played.

In 2019 GameStop introduced GameStop Performance Center, a state-of-the-art training center at The Star, Frisco, Texas, partnering with Complexity Gaming to launch it. This was the first public center to organize and express your passion for eSports and celebrate your love for video games. Doubling the retail creativity by launching new GameStop Innovation Store Labs to build creative customer-focused chances and bring a community of video games to each district's life.
