Intro

Honey Baked Ham is a food retailer that offers fully-cooked hams, delicious turkey breasts, heat-and-serve meals, and other premium meats. It runs 492 stores across the U.S. and has its headquarters in Alpharetta, Georgia.

History of the brand

Honey Baked Ham was founded in 1957 by Harry Hoenselaaar. He first built a bone-in-spiral slicer that cooked and smoked ham in 1924. He said the idea had come to him in a dream. He used a pie tin, a knife, washing machine motor, and tire jack to make his prototype.

By the 1930s, Hoenselaar was already selling honey-glazed hams in Detroit, Michigan. He started by supplying them with drugstores. He later started teaching lunch counter clerks how to use a knife to prepare a ham for sandwiches in one particular drugstore.

He would later buy the store for $500 from the widow of the previous owner. His commitment led to the establishment of The HoneyBaked Ham Company and Café and the company expanded across the U.S. in no time.

Hoenselaar divided his business into four territories according to how they were spread nationally. He then assigned a division to each of his four daughters. The food retailer is currently operated by Linda van Rees – the granddaughter of Hoenselaar. In 2015, she moved the head office to Alpharetta, Georgia.

The Honey Baked Ham has expanded to more than 200 franchise locations and 200 company-operated stores in the U.S. It also now runs an e-commerce business and remains privately-owned by the Hoenselaar family.

Business Directions

Besides selling delicious hams, turkey breasts, meats, and other premium foods, Honey Baked Ham also provides home-style soups, salads, sandwiches, and take-out or dine-in lunch services. Businesses and families can order platters, trays, and catering boxes for office events, get-togethers, picnics, and parties. Key Facts

Honey Baked Ham has received some accolades throughout the years it’s been in existence. In 2013, it was described as “the best of the bunch” by Consumer Reports. Kim Severson from The New York Times referred to Harry J. Hoenselaar as ‘the father of spiral-cut ham.’

The company grew famous for its signature Bone-in half ham. It refers to it as the right balance of ‘savory and sweet’ and claims to still make it like it used to back in the day. The preparation process starts with a rigorous selection of meat that is smoked for up to 24 hours. The final result is a flavorful and rich bite that can’t be found anywhere else on the market.
