King Soopers is a chain of supermarkets headquartered in Denver, Colorado. It’s owned by Kroger and has a significant presence in the Rocky Mountains and Denver. It first started out as an American grocer before growing into what it is today.

History of the brand 

The first King Soopers was opened by Charles W. Houchens and Lloyd J. King in Arvada, Colorado. The ideas were to provide friendly services, quality, cleanliness, and value to shoppers. In just a few years, the supermarket had opened nine more stores before being acquired by Dillon Companies in 1957. 

Lloyd J. King had wanted to name the shop after himself and his two sons Larry and Lew. He got the name ‘Soopers” from the Archie comic series. Larry was an avid reader of these comics as they were quite popular during his time. Whenever something exciting happened, a character in the comic would say “Sooper!”

King had just been discharged from the Navy in 1947 when he started King Soopers. He had the only grocery store at the time that had a pharmacy. He was also an early adopter of a self-serve meat counter. The store’s original location was moved in 1960 to the Arvada Plazza when the shopping mall was built. The previous location was demolished in 2005 to pave way for the Arvada Library. 

Thirty years after its formation, King Soopers was sold to Dillon Co. which later merged with The Kroger Co to make King Soopers one of Kroger brands. Some of the companies Soopers had acquired include ModernHEALTH, Inc., Modern Healthcare, Home Chef, and Henke & Pilot. Some of its main competitors in the industry are Comfort Dental, Service Systems Associates Inc., Comfort Dental, and Dierbergs.
