History

Kirkland’s was started in 1966 by Robert and Carl Kirkland. The two started selling home accessories in Jackson, Tennessee at low prices. They traveled across the world looking for special pieces that they could sell back home. Slowly, the retail store grew from a simple gift shop to a budget-friendly accessories store. By September 2018, the retail chain had more than 405 stores in 36 states. 

Kirkland’s appointed Steve Woodward as CEO in September 2018. Woodward took over from interim CEO Mike Cairnes. Robert Kirkland was a well-known funder of Discovery Park of America, a fun park and museum based in Union City, Tennessee. 

Kirkland’s was originally focused in the Southeast. Today, it has grown beyond the region. The growth was fueled by the realization that the company could be successful in many cities and new locations if it added more designs and styles.
