Kmart is a discount store chain headquartered in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, the United States. The chain bought Sears in 2005, founding a new corporation under the Sears Holdings Corporation name. Kmart is the third largest discount store chain in the world, behind such biggest retailers in the world as Walmart and Target.

The company operates more than 1,500 department stores, over 1,300 discount stores, and nearly 50 supercenters in over 45states around the United States, Guam, and Puerto Rico. The Kmart shops offer general goods such as jewelry, clothing, furniture and decor, accessories for homes, commodities for babies, electronics material, appliances, fitness and sports products, toys and games, tools, and other related products. Besides, in its shops, you can find pharmaceutical products and visit its gift card stores and photo centers. The Kmart product selling is provided through its company-owned shops, and also there is a possibility to make purchases online through its website -

The business was founded by the traveling hardware vendor Sebastian S. Kresge, the owner of eight shops of general goods in the Eastern part of the United States, John G. McCrory, and one shopper of Kresge. In 1897, they opened in Memphis, Tennessee, and Detroit, Michigan, several five-and-ten stores (McCrory continued managing his McCrory Corporation stores through the 1920s). In the end, Kresge was the only owner. By 1907 he run S.S. Kresge stores in eight cities between Chicago and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company developed rapidly with Kresge as president (1907–25) and head of board (1913–66).

Kresge entered the large discount market industry with the construction of the first Kmart shop outside Detroit in 1962 under a program that developed the company Harry B. Cunningham, the company's president. Its success aggressively grew with the opening of an average of 85 discount stores per year in the US and some parts of Canada throughout the next two decades. During that period, Kmart launched its famous "Blue light Specials" in 1965. The Blue Light Special was just a promotion for a brief time in the shop during its working hours. It was announced by using the spinning blue light in the same style as a police car and over the store's public address system with the phrase "attention Kmart shoppers". This phrase became a reference to pop culture. These Specials were used rarely after 1991.

Kmart is much more than the product they sell. The company is also famous for its philanthropy. Kmart for Kids' philanthropic projects are the framework of Kmart's program. The initiative allows kids around the USA to live happy, healthy lives by supporting: March of Dimes, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and the American Diabetes Association. Kmart is the leading supporter of March of Dimes and has raised $114 million over the past 30 years for the charity.

Also, Kmart actively supports different programs on fighting diabetes. In 2008, the company became a sponsor of the project "Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes." During the past two years, with partners' and clients' help, it managed to collect around $1.5 million (it would be $1.9 million in 2021) through its advertisement campaigns in-store.
