Where is the closest MAPCO?
MAPCO Inc.'s history shows ample evidence that large sizes are not a necessity for US energy performance. MAPCO was established in 1960, leapfrogging its pipeline earnings from one energy niche to the next to fund its entry into coal and oil production then moving downstream to a major refiner and distributor for oil and gas. In all of these fields, MAPCO has maintained its foothold, with pipeline operations still delivering exceptionally large sums of cash for use in additional investment and maintenance and oil refining and marketing supply.

MAPCO was founded by Robert E. Thomas, who graduated with a diploma in accounting and corporate finance from the Wharton School of Finance University of Pennsylvania in the 1930's. As the rail investment manager for Keystone Custodian Fund (KCF), a Boston investor group, Thomas was subsequently employed by Pennroad to undress a range of problems raised by former railways. In 1956, in purchasing Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad in Katy, Pennroad named Thomas as its chairman. When Thomas was told about a proposal to pipeline a liquid propane gas pipeline along railway rights from Texas to Albany, New York, Thomas was in a poor financial situation. He was pursuing potential diversification. Katy's lines covered plenty and Thomas followed the idea of a pipeline as a future Railway Investment. In 1958, Thomas and a group of partners had formed a business, MAPCO Inc., which constructed and operated the Mid-American pipeline system.
