History of Marathon Company

Marathon Petroleum Corporation's history dates back to 1887. In Lima, Ohio, a number of small scales oil companies merged together and founded Ohio Oil Company. In 1889, John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil purchased Ohio Oil and moved their headquarters to Findlay, Ohio. Later on, the company keeps evolving with several acquisitions and finally named itself Marathon Oil Company to mark its 75th anniversary.

In 1990, the company’s corporate headquarter moved to Houston, Texas. And in 1998, a joint venture with Ashland Petroleum LLC became a success. Continuing the growth in 2011, Marathon Petroleum Corporation became stand-alone marketing, refining, and transportation company headquartered in Findlay, Ohio.

Business Direction

Marathon Petroleum is one of the largest public companies in the world. Their entire business is based on three types of major operations: refining, retail, and midstream. They are supporting the energy and fuel needs for over 130 years. And currently, Marathon Petroleum Corporation is operating United State's one of the largest refining systems.

Marathon Petroleum owns a network of 13 refineries connected with pipelines, terminals, and barges with an approximate capacity of refining 2.9 million crude oil each day.

The midstream segment of Marathon Petroleum basically includes all the operations done by their sponsored partner MPLX. They are responsible for the transport, market, and distribution of crude oil and refined products via the logistics network.

The last part of Marathon Petroleum’s business operations involves a wide-scale network of retail stores and outlets that are present across the US and Northern Mexico to ensure the safe and secure delivery of refined products to the normal public.
