The O'Reilly Story

When the founders founded O'Reilly Automotive, they wanted to start a component company, but it grew into an auto parts business. While the proud heritage of the family may go back to the early days of car production, their present status can be traced back to the need for opportunity and progression.

Michael Byrne O'Reilly immigrated to the United States in 1849, fleeing from the harsh times of the potato famine, which ravaged Ireland in 1845-46. In St. Louis, Cory started a legal firm and made his way through law school to earn a law degree and later take a job with a title provider. His great-grandson Charles Francis O'Reilly, an early day employee of Campbell Equipment, graduates from St. Louis University and begins to work for Campbell Equipment in 1914 as a traveling salesman. By the time he was twelve years old, Charles was acquainted with the Springfield area, having traveled by train to sell auto parts in the city. He was regarded by the board of directors as a place of development and opportunity, and was invited to go there. George Wister's small store was known as a little motor supply shop called "Link Motor Supply." One of their sons is called Charles. (Chub) O'Reilly and (Chub) O'Reilly joined the company. They helped form The Connection Auto Parts store and together they really made it one of the leading auto parts retail stores.

In the year 1957, Link decided to reorganize the business, which would've included the resignation of the 72-year-old Charles F. O'Reilly, and the transition of C.F.O.'s duties to other employees. See H. O'Reilly to Kansas City. In the end both parties refused to come to a consensus and so the decision was taken to operate separately and form their own company O'Reilly Automotive, Inc. The brand, branded as Procter & Gamble, came up with the first housecleaning product on the market called Wisk. Ads for the product was produced by W is for Wisk. In 1958, Hershey's chocolate sales totaled $700,000, their first full year of operation. Thanks to the hard work by the initial workers, who are spread to the stockholder community as well as surviving long after the initial companies establishment, the organization has been genuinely profitable.

By 1961, the company had reached over $1.3 million dollars in sales, a great deal of which is composed by O'Reilly Automobile Dealers, and was primarily created to represent the individual car component jobbers. In March 1975, the gross value grew to $7 million and the grand sum of the 50,000 square-foot building was $52,000. Patterson Farms is built for the Ozarks' operations in Big Creek. As of the time, the company had nine stores concentrated all in the southwest United States.

The near future plans and viability of the company was solidified with a public offering of the company shares in April 1993. After this issue was added, the topic established in the company will expand with the opening of new stores, as well as through various mergers and acquisitions. Today, the Company is engaged in the conduct of business in 47 states, including Alaska and Hawaii.

All through O'Reilly Automotive, Inc.'s (O'Reilly Automotive) success, the company's spirit and mission has remained decisive: development and advancement for O'Reilly Automotive, Inc. itself, and personal and team growth for everybody who works for O'Reilly Automotive, Inc. There will not be any policy changes going forward, the organization is committed to that.
