The history of the brand

The company was founded as a veterinary supply in 1965. Its services could be ordered by post. Leonard Green & Associates and TPG Capital purchased the business in 2000.

In 2004, Petco acquired the naming right to San Diego Baseball Center, which then became the Petco Park. The corporation settled on a $60 million payment for 22 years for the San Diego Padres. It was one of the highest prices charged for obtaining naming rights for a baseball park at that time.

Since 2004, Jim Myers was President and CEO of the group, and in 2016 he retired. Brad Weston became the next president and chief merchant of the company. Petco opened a corporate support center at San Antonio in 2011 of 116,000 square feet. The center employed about 400 workers and was run together with its corporate center based in San Diego. Ron Coughlin, a Hewlett-Packard veteran and executive director of PepsiCo, took over as CEO in June 2018.
