The owner was not disheartened and reopened in a few days after renaming the restaurant to Popeyes Mighty Good Chicken. 

In 1975 the name was once again changed to Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken. The company was expanding quickly, so Al Copeland decided to franchise the restaurant in 1976. In 1984 the network extended to Canada. By 1985 Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen had more than 500 restaurants.

Popeyes was under a debt of $390 million in 1990 after purchasing Church's and filed for bankruptcy in 1991. In 1992 the court permitted a plan under the guarantee of some creditors, and Copeland created America's Favorite Chicken, Inc. to act as a holding company of Church's and Popeyes. AFC was opened to the public in 2001. Church's was acquired by Arcapita in 2004.
