History of Publix

George W. Jenkins founded Publix Supermarkets in 1930. Jenkins started the supermarket chain as a small grocery store in Winter Haven, Florida, and branded it as Publix. Five years later, he opened the second store in Winter Haven. It was Jenkins who opened the first-ever supermarket in Florida back in 1940.

The expansion of the stores was stalled by World War II although the company’s finances were hardly affected. The headquarters of the stores were moved from Winter Haven to Lakeland in 1951 before replacing all grocery and food stores with supermarkets, creating the modern-day retail chains that we know.
