Quest Diagnostics was first founded as Metropolitan Pathology Laboratory, Inc., by Paul A Brown in 1967. The name was changed to MetPath, Inc., in 1969 and Corning Clinical Laboratories in 1982 after being purchased by Corning Glass Works. 27 years later, it became an independent spin-off from Corning. In the following years, it acquired Medical Laboratory, Inc. and SmithKline Beecham Clinical Laboratories. It added AmeriPath, a diagnostic testing equipment company, in 2004. 

Quest Diagnostics has formed several partnerships throughout its existence. For example, it collaborated with UMass Memorial Health Care in central New England to buy a clinical outreach laboratory. In 2016, it partnered with Safeway to provide testing services at 12 of its stores in Colorado, Texas, Virginia, California, and Maryland.
