Intro
Save A Lot Food Stores Ltd. is a chain of stores that offers discounted items in the U.S. It operates about 1,300 stores in 36 states and has its headquarters in St. Ann, Missouri, Greater St. Louis.
History of the brand
Save A Lot was established by Bill Moran in 1977. He opened the first store in Cahokia, Illinois. The idea was to provide an alternative to other larger supermarkets where customers could shop.
Throughout the years, Moran remained at the center of the company’s leadership and expansion until his retirement in 2006. He oversaw the establishment of over 1,000 locations in the U.S.
In 1994, the store was acquired by Supervalu Inc. It was the largest grocery wholesaler in America at the time and owner of Scott’s Food & Pharmacy as well as Cub Foods. The acquisition was done alongside that of Sho ‘n Save. It increased the store’s licensee opportunities to include the conventional suppliers of Supervalu.
The store also started running a licensee incentive program to drive growth. This involved offering individual applicants up to $200,000 as capital for every new store. The program started in 2009 and is still operational today.
In 2011, Santiago Roces, a Walmart veteran replaced Bill Shaner as President and CEO. He had previously served as vice president and general manager at Walmart. He oversaw Save A Lot’s growth, including its licensing affiliation with Rafael Ortega - a widely acknowledged Hispanic grocer.
The agreement was followed by the rebranding of six Save A Lot stores that were located in Texas to ‘El Ahorro Save A Lot.’ These offered products familiar to Save A Lot customers alongside conventional Hispanic staples. The entire subsidiary was later sold to Onex Corporation by SuperValu in 2016.
