Sears is a chain of department stores that sells merchandise and provides related services. It offers a wide range of apparel, home items, and automotive products and services through affiliated specialty and full-line stores as well as Sears-branded locations in the United States. Throughout the 1980s, Sears was the top retailer in the United States. Here are some of the things that you should know about the company.

History of the Brand

Sears was founded in 1892 by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck. It was incorporated by Julius Rosenwald and Richard Sears in 1906. It is currently based in Hoffman Estates Illinois where it operates from. In its earlier days, it operated as a mail ordering catalog company with diverse product lines such as drugs, furniture, dry goods, hardware, consumer durables, and anything else that was popular with farm households. It later ventured into retail in 1925.

The first retail location was in Chicago, Illinois. This was after the original mail-order business model began to fail due to high competition from departmental stores. The success of that first store led to the expansion of Sears into other parts of the country. Sears opened more branches and included the mail-order business, especially in working-class and lower-middle-class neighborhoods. The brand's popularity helped to pull in customers as well as the continuous growth of car ownership is far from the downtown shopping districts.

In June 2019, Sears announced its acquisition by Transform Hodco LLC. This led to the closure of several stores.
