Stop & Shop History
The origins of Stop & Shop can be tracked back to 1892 when a supermarket shop known as 'Greenie Store' was opened in Massachusetts. Rabinowitz family established Stop & Shop in 1914 as an economy grocery store chain, and it adopted a new self-service four years following. Its next store was inaugurated in late 1914, while many new stores opened in the coming years. By 1917, the Stop & Shop chain had 15 stores.
After the store opening in Natick, Massachusetts, in 1959, Stop & Shop had 100 stores. In 1961, it acquired the department store chain Bradlees. After conquering Connecticut and Rhode Island, it entered New York in the early 1960s.
Stop & Shop supermarket business was acquired in the late 1980s and was held private. In 1996 the chain was bought by Ahold USA, which earlier bought the first public supermarkets. Stop & Shop was merged in 2016 with Delhaize group, and its new holding company name is Ahold Delhaize.
