Subway came into existence in 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, when Fred DeLuca built "Pete's Super Submarines" by taking a loan of $1,000 from his friend Peter Buck. Fred DeLuca created Doctor's Associates, Inc. in the following year to operate the restaurant after the company expanded.

The reason behind choosing this name was not because they got sponsorship or help from some medical organization but because Fred wanted to accumulate enough money to pay for his medical tuition fee and also because Peter had a doctoral degree in physics.

The shop was renamed Subway in 1968. Subsequently, in 1974 the owners planned to start franchising the company. In the following decades, the company began expanding like a wildfire across the globe.
