Synovus Financial Corporation is a financial services firm headquartered in Columbus, Georgia, which formerly was a Columbus Bank and Trust Company. In Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee, Synovus offers commercial, retail, bank, investment, and mortgage service through 249 branches with 335 carriers.
In 1888, after a textile mill incident, the bank was opened, which involved a worker's dress in machinery spilling in her hem money. After she told a manager of a factory she thought this was the best place to keep her savings, instead, he promised to protect her money and pay her interest on her balance at the mill. All company workers were soon given this service.
Columbus Bank and Trust (CB&T), Synovus' founding parent company, has strong roots in its home city. CB&T launched TSYS in 1959 and began credit card processing for other banks in 1974. CB&T founded TSYS in 1983, with majority ownerschaft, a separate publicly traded firm. The spin-off that was completed as of end 2007 was announced on 25 October 2007 by TSYS and Synovus (having 81 percent share at that time). Synovus took its current name in 2010.
