As the Twin City Building and Loan Association, TCF Bank started its business in 1923. In 1936 it obtained a federal charter and became a Federal Loan and Savings Association for Twin City. In 1986, TCF Banking and Savings, F.A was issued. The company was chartered. There was a mistake (TCF Bank).
The Chemical bank based in Detroit, Michigan has announced on 28 January 2019 it will merge with TCF Bank. The company will maintain its TCF name but will be headquartered at the new Detroit-built TCF Tower. The Bank will also operate in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Midland, Michigan in addition to the Headquarters in Detroit. The merger of the current TCF Bank was completed on August 5, 2019.
In Minneapolis was founded the TCF Bank. It is still a major force in the Twin Cities with approximately 110 branches in the city. Within Cub Foods stores are in-store branches. His former head office was in Wayzata, Minnesota but it now has larger Plymouth and Minnetonka activity centers. TCF Bank operates about 130 branches throughout Michigan, including around 90 former branches of the Chemical Bank. The purchase of the Great Lakes National Bank expanded TCF's presence in Michigan in 1995. From 1995 until 1998, the TCF Bank branches operated in Michigan under the name of the Great Lakes National Bank.
In 2002, TCF Bank was chosen as a preferred provider of banking services to students, teachers, and workers at the University of Michigan. The agreement was reached in 2015 by the university.
TCF Bank announced its Ann Arbor real estate firm McKinley Associates in 2005 that it will sell its Michigan headquarters building, though part of the land level still belongs to TCF Bank.
TCF reported on 6 November 2006 the sale to Independent Bank of 10 subsidiaries at Battle Creek, Bay City, and Saginaw. This sale concentrated TCF's Michigan branches mainly in and around Metropolitan Detroit in Southeast Michigan.
On 21 January 2020, a TCF assistant manager at a Middlebelt road branch in Livonia, Michigan, summoned Sauntore Thomas police officer to file checks on a racial discrimination case with a tribunal holder, who was attempting to deposit checks. Despite the verification by his lawyer that checks were authentic, the branch office could not verify the checks and argued that the checks were fraudulent. Thomas began his suit for unspecified damage on 22 January 2020. On 23 January 2020 TCF apologized for not involving local policemen and clarified that extra measures involving big deposits and cash applications were taken.
