History of the Company

Tim Horton and Jim Charade opened their first store in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario. In 1974 Horton died and Ron Joyce took control of the operations and expanded the franchise into a multi-billion company. Charade left in 1966 but later came back in 1970. 

Joyce bought out Hortons’ shares for $1m just before he died in an accident in 1974. He became the full owner of the 40 stores and expanded the company in numerous geographic areas and added its own branded products and kitchenware. Later on, Tim Hortons was purchased by Burger King in 2014.

Tim Horton has over 4,846 restaurants with the majority of the restaurants being in Canada and over 3,800 in the United States. There are 25 locations in the United Kingdom and 29 in the Middle East. Tim Hortons has also opened its restaurants in military bases such as Afghanistan, Fort Knox in Kentucky and Naval Norfolk in Virginia, to name a few.
