History of U-Haul

U-Haul was founded in 1945 with an investment of $5,000 by Leonard Shoen and his wife Anna Marry Carty in Ridgefield, Washington. The company started when this couple wanted to move from Los Angeles to Portland, but they could not find any moving service.

In just 10 years, U-Haul owned 10,000+ vehicles, growing exponentially and gaining recognition nationally. Shoen had 12 children from multiple marriages, so he shared the stakes with them and kept only 2% for himself, which led to a significant dispute. Eventually, in 1986, U-Haul was taken over by siblings Mark and Edward. In 1999 Leonard Shoen got fatally injured in an accident.

U-Haul filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2003 and recovered from it in 2004.

Business Direction

U-Haul Moving Company provides moving services to the people who want to transport their belongings to new places. U-Haul has 6 sizes of trucks from 10 ft to 26 ft with trailers of different capacities. The largest truck of 26 ft can transport a load of 7,400 pounds of goods.

U-Haul provides two types of services: In-Town and One-Way moves.  The one-way service means that trucks can pick and drop the load at different places, whereas in-town means that the load has to be picked and dropped at the exact location.

In simple terms, in-town indicates moving to a local area. After completing the in-town task, the customer should return the truck to the place where it was rented, while for one way, the vehicle is returned to the nearest location to the customer’s destination.
