History of Village Inn

In 1958, the primary Village Inn Pancake house was established by James Mola and Merton Anderson in the US state of Denver. In December 1959, it was organized as Village Inn Pancake House Inc., while franchising commenced in 1961 with its initial location in Tampa. Village Inn was well-known in public by 1982, VICORP Restaurants Inc. by acquiring Poppin’ Fresh Pies chain.

Seventy-one more restaurants were acquired by VICORP in 1984 when they purchased The Continental Restaurant Systems division of Ralston Purina's and 175 establishments from previous Sambo's in Florida, California, and Arizona. The dine-in locations of Arizona and Florida were converted to Village Inn, whereas the California spots were turned to the Bakers Square Restaurants.

Pancake House got dismissed from the title by the end of the 1980s, and in addition to breakfast, Village Inn started offering lunch and dinner menus. Their restaurants underwent large-scale renovations in the 1990s, and in 2001 VICORP was acquired by BancBoston Capital and Goldner Hawn Johnson & Morrison Inc. Because of the 2008 fiscal crisis, VICORP had to file for bankruptcy, and later on, it was taken by American Blue Ribbon Holdings in 2009.
