San Mateo, California is a beautiful city in Southern California, about thirty miles southwest of San Francisco, and about thirty miles north of Bakersfield. San Mateo has an approximate 2021 population of 105,426. It is well-known for its high-quality wine production, and for the scenic views, it presents. It also has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. The city was named a national monument by the US Congress in 2021.

San Mateo has a number of museums devoted to art and history, as well as some of the finest public gardens and beach communities in the country. The City of San Mateo has developed into a cultural hub. Many popular authors, musicians, and photographers have been to visit the City of San Mateo, or its neighboring cities of Santa Barbara, Halfmoon, Encinitas, and Sunnydale. Among these visitors are some famous celebrities, whose lives were touched in some way by the city.

Sir Winston Churchill is said to have said about San Mateo, California that it was "a city full of mystery, magic, and imagination." Other famous personalities from the area include author Aldus Huxley, movie director George Lucas, and actor John Turturro. In 1940, President Roosevelt came to visit San Mateo, while on a two-week vacation at the Presidio of San Francisco. While there, he said that he 'never once saw a flower more than I ever saw in my life.'

The city's historic buildings are worth visiting. These include the Veteran's Administration Park, Presidio Park, Crissy Field, the Almanzaceae Garden, the Historic Gaslamp Quarter, the Historic Board Room, and, in memory of Van Zandt, the Van Zandt House. The art and architecture of the area have influenced others, most notably the likes of the American architectural firm Foster and Costello. The house itself is a delight to walk through, especially at night.

A very popular attraction in the city is SeaWorld. The park features a number of shows, including the 'Freeze Dance' and the Dolphin Show. People of all ages and walks of life are enthralled with the natural world of animals like seals, whales, dolphins, and fish. However, the star attraction of the SeaWorld is the Shamu, which is a stingray that weighs a record-breaking 4.6 tons.

Not far from SeaWorld is the Museum of Contemporary Art, which was founded in 1979. In this building, you will find modern art and other forms of art, as well as a variety of other things. One of the most famous works of art in the museum is a painting entitled 'The Double Standards of American Art'. In this work, Van Gogh displayed the standard of whitewashing white Americans and the starving black slaves in Africa. It has been called one of the most important paintings of all time.

For those interested in architecture, there is the beautiful Saint Francis Cathedral. This cathedral has been deemed as one of the most beautiful churches in the world, by many, including Pope Benedict XVI. Those who live in the area, especially those who are Catholic, take great interest in the events and happenings that take place within the cathedral. They attend Mass, they go to the priest and they have their own ceremonies. To them, it is more fulfilling than anything else.
